The Left is preparing for a broader alliance against Narendra Modi that will include political and non-political organisations from across the country.

However, the alliance may not include the Congress. Besides, its outcome would certainly be slowing down of its attack on the latter.

According to indications, the Left will announce its plans next week.

The shift in the Left focus from targeting the Congress and the BJP to target Modi-led BJP has been articulated in the recent editorial of “People’s Democracy”, the mouthpiece of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM).

“Unless the government and all political and social forces rally together to safeguard our secular democratic, pluralistic social order, the very future of modern India would be in peril,” says Sitaram Yechury in his editorial.

“It is clear that in the run-up to the 2014 general elections, the RSS/BJP, as evidenced in their decision to project the Gujarat chief minister as their prime ministerial candidate, shall leave no stone unturned to sharpen communal polarisation and hope for electoral dividend on that basis,” he says.

“India’s rich plurality and its unity and integrity need to be preserved and, on that basis, the struggles for creating a better India for all our people must be strengthened,” he adds.
