KPRS stir against eviction in Kodagu district

Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) Kodagu district unit members staged a protest in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Monday, opposing the forest department’s move to evict people who are residing in Gomala, Devara Kadu and ‘Oorodave’ lands in Kodagu district.

The protesters said that the families of Valnur Basavanna Devara Bana Samrakshana Trust are residing in this land from generations. But, the forest department, succumbing to the conspiracy of the fake environmentalists has issued them notice, thus forcing the poor to vacate the land.

Addressing the protesters, Raitha Sangha District Convenor Kishor Kuttappa said that the forest department is alleging that houses have been constructed by felling trees at Chariyaparambu near Napoklu. On the other hand, they are also hoodwinking the people by saying that they have to evict for their houses are in low-lying areas, hence they would face flood problem during rains.

“In reality, the forest department has cut the trees at Chariyaparambu. Poor homeless people built their houses in the vacant land. The land is located quite far from the river, therefore there is no fear of flood,” he stated.

The protesters demanded the administration to acquire C and D land illegally encroached by rich landlords in the district and distribute it to the poor landless people.
