Childline 1098 completes 1 year

Childline 1098, a 24-hour free emergency phone and outreach services for children in need of care and protection, has completed one year after being taken over by PADI organisation as a collaborative agency with Nodal agency School of Social Work Roshni Nilaya.

Addressing a press meet here on Monday, Childline Collab Agency Director Renni D'Souza shared the achievements and experiences after PADI took over Childline.

Childline has taken up several cases against child sexual abuse, child trafficking, corporal punishment, adolescent behavioural problems in schools etc. A special campaign will be held to completely stop child beggary, said D'Souza.

Open house programmes, involving corporator of the specific area, government officials of district child protection unit, members of police department, education department, Women and Child Welfare Department and the NGOs have already been conducted in Jeppina Mogaru, Bajal, Bolara and Yekkuru.

Open house programmes will be conducted in October at Dakke (Docks), November - Central Market, December-Jalligudde, January - Bunder near Police Station, February - Vamanjoor, March  - Ullal, April - Kankanady.

'Childline se Dosthi,' week celebrations will be held in November 2013. Letter will be issued to CEO, DDPI and DC regarding ban on corporal punishment in schools.

Awareness programmes with regard to childline, POSCO Act and Corporal Punishment, JJ Act will be held in schools and colleges in the coming months, he said.

The first issue of 'Mangalore Childline' was released on the occasion.

2,246 call helpline

The childline has received 2,246 calls from September 2012 to August 2013, which has been divided under different categories such as Shelter (46 calls), Medical (1), Restoration (3), Protection from abuse (67), Sponsorship (2), Referred by another childline (4), Child lost and found (3), Parents asking for help (3), Emotional support and guidance (18), Information and referral to service (33), Information on Childline and voluneteer (130), Follow up calls at city level (396), Follow up calls from other childline (28), Silent (125), Blank (121), Wrong (123), One sided (38), Crank (11), Chat (102), Did not find (4), Phone testing (749) and Administrative calls (239).

RTE cell

As childline receives many calls with regard to RTE, a separate RTE cell will be opened. If there are any violations of RTE in schools, one can call 1098 or 0824 - 2437795 and give complaint regarding it, said Renni D'Souza.

Monthly meetings

To create awareness on childline and discuss issues concerning children, monthly meetings are being organised on first Saturday of every month at 2 pm at Childline Collab Agency: Padi, near Colaco Hospital, 2nd Cross, Lower Bendoor. Public are invited to participate and provide ideas and suggestions.
