BJP to send fact-finding teams to violence-hit places

Last Updated 01 October 2013, 19:28 IST

The State BJP will send four teams to find out the ‘truth’ about the communal tension and police atrocities over the past few weeks in the State.

Addressing reporters on Tuesday, State BJP general secretary C T Ravi said several reports of police atrocities have come from Sira (Tumkur), Aldur  and Kadur (Chikmagalur) and Lakshmeshvara (Gadag) over the past few days.

“We are alarmed with the highhandedness of the police who have committed atrocities against peaceful processions during Ganesha Chaturthi, to appease the minority community,” alleged Ravi.

It is said that in all the above places, barring Kadur where farmers have been agitating, people from the local Ganesha Mandalis were picked up by the police and charged with serious crimes. The BJP leaders claimed that these people were all innocents and, in fact, complainants in cases relating to stonepelting on Ganesha processions. Accompanied with photographs of a person who was allegedly beaten up by police in Aldur, Ravi and BJP MLC Ashwathnarayan said the Congress was “hurting the sentiments of the majority community”.

“The Congress is trying to use police force against the majority community and polarise the votes for political gain. Why else will the police disrupt peaceful processions of Ganesha Chaturthi in these places,” asked Ravi.

The Aldur team will be led by former chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda, while the Lakshmeshvara incident will be investigated by the other former chief minister Jagadish Shettar. The Sira case will be ‘probed’ by a BJP team led by MLC Shivayogi Swamy and Ayanur Manjunath, MP. The BJP will send a fact-finding team to Kadur, under former State party president K S Eshwarappa. The Karnataka BJP has condemned the letter by Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde to all chief ministers for taking precautions in booking terror cases against Muslims. “Does this mean that innocent people from other communities are not arrested?”said Ravi.
