Heavy rain triggers floods in Odisha

Heavy rain for the last few days has triggered floods in some rivers in the state, particularly in north Odisha. Rivers like Jalaka in Balasore district was already flowing above the danger mark by Wednesday morning. Some villages in Basta block of Balasore have already become marooned by the flood water.

 The district authorities have started distributing relief among the affected people, a report from the north Odisha district said. Two rain related deaths have been reported from Basta area of Balasore district so far. Both the deaths occurred due to wall collapse.

 Meanwhile, several parts of Odisha received rainfall on the fourth consecutive day under the impact of the low pressure formed in the Bay of Bengal. The system was laying centred over south Chhattisgarh by Wednesday evening. The rainfall will continue in the state under its impact, the local met office said.  “Rain and thundershower will occur in most of the places in Odisha during the next 48 hours. The rainfall is likely to be heavy in one or two places”, the weather office said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

During the last 24 hours, Balasore in north Odisha Balasore district recorded maximum 82.8 mm of rainfall followed by 58.8 mm in Baripada town in another northern district of Mayurbhanj.

However, on Wednesday maximum rainfall - 23 mm - was recorded in Malkangiri town in southern Odisha Malkangiri district followed by Chandbali(20 mm) in Bhadrak district in the north.
