All ears to fusion music

Beautiful experience

All ears to fusion music

Bflat Bar, in association with Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (Chennai), recently presented Ed DeGenaro’s ‘Elektrik Circus’. It was a night of light and enjoyable fusion music that made for easy listening.

The band comprised five talented individuals who share a common passion for making music. This was evident in the chemistry on stage and the efficiency with each one played his or her own part. The ‘Elektrik Circus’ comprises Ed on guitar, Ujjayinee Roy DeGenaro on vocals, Neil Smith on drums, Wayne Fernandez on bass and Anthony Karuna on keyboards.

Having grown up in Germany and Los Angeles, Ed fell in love with India in 2010, when he visited Chennai to teach at Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music. Since then, there’s been no looking back and the fun he and the band have on stage is a reflection of that.

During the gig, the band performed songs from Ed’s previous albums like Meera, ‘The Brother’, ‘Matte’s Bible Camp’ and ‘Prayer’. Songs from his latest album like ‘Marilyn Monroe’ were also on the set and worked well with the audience, who thoroughly enjoyed the eclectic mix of bebop, blues rock and even some metal riffs that was played.

“Bflat has become like a home to me and it’s my favourite place to play in Bangalore. People are always open to the music here, which makes it a
pleasure to return every few months. For this gig, people enjoyed the solos
and cheered us on. But I’ve seen a better response at the venue in the past,” said Ed after the show.

Talking about his new material, he added, “The previous stuff was almost entirely instrumental. The new songs are more lyrics-based. However, the band’s chemistry hasn’t changed with the change in sound.”

Both the new and old songs were enjoyed by the majority of the crowd. “It’s always nice to enjoy an evening with some good music, which is exactly what I did. Some of the compositions really stood out from the kind of stuff one hears these days. It was a beautiful experience,” said Jason, who attended the concert.
