30 truckloads of sand seized in Tumkur

A team headed by Tahsildar Kamakshamma conducted a surprise raid and seized 30 truckloads of sand stored illegally at Goobehalli in Handanakere hobli of the taluk, recently.

The sand was illegally mined from the Suvarnamukhi river bed, which is at a distance.
Residents of the village said that illegal mining in the river bed was going on unabated for quite some time. The miscreants mined sand during daytime and stored them in the village.

At night, the sand was loaded into lorries, using earthmovers, and transported to cities like Tumkur and Bangalore, they added. Incidentally, many farmers too are involved in illegal sand mining.

Acting on a tip-off, the team comprising Kamakshamma, Village Accountant Yogesh raided the place.

“However, it seems that miscreants had information about the impending raid and fled the place with lorries and earthmovers,” Kamakshamma said. Huliyar police have registered a case.
