Rangdajied share points with Dempo

Rangdajied United made a fine comeback to split the points with Dempo in a third round match of the I-League here on Friday. This is also the hosts’ first ever I-League point.

After Dempo comfortably lead 2-0 in the first half, the newcomers clawed their way back superbly in the second half for a share of the spoils.

Roberto Mendis (Beto) gave Dempo the lead in the sixth minute when he curved in a freekick from the edge of the box before Billy Mehmet scored from the penalty spot in first half added time.

Rangdajied then adjusted to the pace of the game before halving the deficit through Lalnunpuia in the 60th minute before substitute Sandesh Gadkari restored parity in the 80th minute.

Playing their first ever home match of the tournament, Rangdajied United, backed by the vociferous crowd, did not get the start they wanted as Beto forced them on the backfoot.

After Beto had given Dempo the lead, the former I-League champions extended their advantage in first-half stoppage time. After Thomas Saikhom brought down Mehmet in the box, he took it upon himself to score from the penalty spot.

The change of ends also signalled a change of fortunes as Lalnunpuia whipped in a scorcher of an effort from the edge of the area before an equaliser from Gadkari saw the capacity erupting in joy.

Dempo would rue a lost opportunity but for Rangdajied this could prove to be an invaluable point in their fight for survival.
