Lift crash: directors of research centre booked

Last Updated 04 October 2013, 20:36 IST

The Kodigehalli police have booked two directors of Semler Research Centre, where nine people sustained injuries in a lift crash earlier this week.

Cases have been registered against Kritish Bopanna and Umesh under Sections 337 and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others in) of IPC.
“Kritish Bopanna, Umesh and others are accused in the complaint. We have questioned them and obtained some vital documents,” DCP (North-East) T R Suresh said.

The police officer said the two have not been arrested and a decision will be taken after receiving a report from the Electrical Inspectorate. The report is likely to be submitted on Monday, he said.

Meanwhile, a team of the Electrical Inspectorate which examined the crash site observed that low quality construction materials, over usage and lack of proper maintenance of the lift led to the accident. The team opined that the owner and the agency responsible for maintaining lift have failed to discharge their duties. It would submit a report to the police after collecting more details, sources said.

Maruthi and Ravi Kumar, injured in the crash are stated to be critical. Both are being treated at Columbia Asia Hospital.

“They are responding to the treatment and but need constant monitoring and medical supervision, and hence are still in the ICU,” said a hospital authority. Eight volunteers, who had come to donate blood at the drug evaluation centre, and a housekeeping staff had sustained injuries, two of them critically, when a lift came crashing down from the second floor on October 2.
