Kasargod district received a new honour in the field of education with Union Minister of State for HRD Dr Shashi Tharoor declaring it as second district in the country to have attained total primary education.

The honour came to the district after the success of the Vijnana Jyothi Scheme, a joint venture of the Kasargod Zilla Panchayat and the Literacy Mission.

Speaking on the occasion, Shashi Tharoor said that achieving cent per cent literacy is essential for the progress of the country. The future of the country will change if there was a campaign for primary education.

“The literacy rate of the country was 17 per cent when the British left us. Now, it has reached 74 per cent. The literacy rate among women is only 68.5 per cent in the country. With RTE Act, 69 per cent of female students are pursuing tenth standard,” he said.

Out of 640 districts in the country, oly two districts in Kerala have attained total primary education.
