Teen hangs herself  a day after marriage

A 19-year-old girl, who entered wedlock on Wednesday, allegedly hanged herself early Thursday morning at her parents’ house at Bendre Nagar in KS Layout.

Pushpa took the extreme step within 24 hours of her marriage and the reason for her decision is yet to be ascertained, police said.

Pushpa was the eldest daughter of Govindaraju and had completed her second PUC at BNM College. Her father is a tailor and her mother a homemaker. The couple have another daughter studying in Class 7.

Police said Pushpa got engaged to Hanumantharaya, 25, a resident of KG Nagar, four months ago. He is the youngest son in the family which runs saloons in KG Nagar.


The wedding took place at SBM marriage hall on Bull Temple Road in Basavanagudi at 11 am. After the ceremony, the couple went to Hanumantharaya’s house and performed some rituals.

Later, they left for the girl’s house in Bendre Nagar where another set of rituals were conducted late at night, police said.


After taking bath, Pushpa went into a room to change her dress, while her husband waited in the bathroom for her to fetch him water, a mandatory ritual in their community.

When she did not come out of the room for sometime, her anxious parents knocked on the door, but there was no response.

They broke it open only to find her hanging from the ceiling using a veil, police said.
The body was shifted to KG Hospital for an autopsy.
