A 21-year-old youth was shot dead late on Sunday night near his house in outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar in a road rage incident while he was returning home after celebrating Dussehra, police said.

Investigators suspect the there was some personal personal enmity between the victim and the assailants, but a minor road mishap triggered the attack.

The victim, Sumit Kumar, a resident of Budh Vihar in Vijay Vihar area, lived in a rented flat and was into property business along with his uncle.

On Sunday evening, Sumit’s friends came to his flat and they had liquor, said a police officer. Then Sumit and one of his friends went to a public ground a few kilometres away from his house to see Dussehra celebrations. He was riding pillion on his friend’s motorcycle.

“While returning home, a car brushed their two-wheeler. They had an argument with the car’s occupants, following which an assailant from the car came out and shot Kumar twice in the chest,” said the officer.

He collapsed on the spot. His friend then called the police control room. Later, he was taken to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared brought dead.

The assailants could not drive away as the front wheels of the car got stuck in a drain. They fled on foot and left the car behind, said the officer.

The body was sent to Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital for post-mortem.Police have detained his friends for questioning.

“Prima facie it seems the accused were known to the victim, and they had a personal enmity with him. The road rage incident seemed to have triggered the murder,” said the officer, adding that the accused have been identified and they will be arrested soon.
