Hooch claims 22 lives in Uttar Pradesh

At least 22 people, mostly Dalits, have died and over a dozen others are battling for their lives after consuming spurious liquor in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh district, about 275 km from here.

The toll could go up as several people who have been admitted to different hospitals in Azamgarh and Varanasi were stated to be in a critical condition, sources said. Eyewitness accounts, however, claimed that 27 people have died in the tragedy.

According to reports, the victims hailed from Naraon, Adampur, Chakia and other adjoining villages of the district.

Reports stated that the victims had bought liquor from a local vendor, Bhura Chauhan, from Dampur village on Wednesday night. They complained of dizziness and loss of sight after consuming the liquor and were rushed to the hospitals.

The matter came to light on Friday when several of them undergoing treatment died. Over a dozen people had been referred to the medical college hospital at Varanasi, sources said.

Four police personnel, including the station house in-charge of the local police station, and two excise officials have been suspended in this connection and an inquiry has been ordered. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the tragedy, sources said.
