The High Court of Karnataka on Monday quashed a private complaint lodged by former MLA Raghupathi Bhat in Udupi district court, blaming Atul Rao for Bhat’s first wife Padmapriya’s suicide.

Hearing the petition filed by Atul Rao seeking quashing of the complaint filed in the Udupi court, Justice Nagmohan Das ordered quashing of the complaint.

Bhat's first wife Padmapriya was found dead in Delhi under mysterious circumstances in 2008. Following a year-long investigation, the police submitted in their report that Padmapriya had committed suicide and that Atul Rao has no role in her death, but he had cheated her and had created fictitious documents.

Based on the police report, Bhat had filed a private complaint in Udupi district court, alleging that Atul Rao had an affair with his wife and he had provoked her to commit suicide. Atul Rao sought directions from the High Court to quash the complaint.
