Nice to be among runs: Hughes

Last Updated 22 October 2013, 16:14 IST

When Phillip Hughes came to India for the Test series earlier this year, he failed miserably with the bat. The left-hander found it hard to get going against India’s spinners in a series Australia lost 0-4.

Cut to the ongoing one-day series, Hughes is one of the better performers for Australia, having given them good starts in all the matches so far.

The 24-year-old discussed change in his fortunes and other subjects during a chat with the media.

On his success in ODIs: The Test series a few months back wasn’t as successful... For us to lose that series 4-0 was extremely disappointing. We have moved on from that, this is a different format. I suppose the wickets are different and it’s a white ball. But there are a couple of things that I obviously picked up and worked on. That was the first time that I had toured India on an international tour and Test series. Yeah, it’s a nice thing to have toured and come back and score a few runs.

On his successful partnership with Aaron Finch: Aaron's very good to bat with. Standing at the other end, I've got the best seat in the house when he goes off. We've had a really good relationship over the last five to ten years actually. We roomed together at the academy and always kept in touch. Aaron's just a fantastic guy and cricketer.  I love going out to bat with him. The one disappointing thing (with our partnerships) is that we'd like to make the partnership bigger and try and take the game on even more. We've been quite consistent in the first three games and we've spoken about not looking too far ahead. Hopefully, we can keep posting totals on the board, setting the guys that come in through the middle order.

On the challenge of containing Dhoni: It can be really challenging when you have got a world class player like Dhoni. He has been exceptional for a number of years and he is real good batting at the death and hitting the ball over the park. But the bowlers are still positive and they don’t want to dwell too much on that game. I still think the bowlers have done a fantastic job through the series.
