Security stepped up at Kaiga Atomic plant

Last Updated 12 March 2010, 16:54 IST

Atomic Energy Commission has laid emphasis on the security of the nuclear power plant following contamination of water cooler with heavy water on November 24.

Already cameras have been installed at unit three and four and work is on at Unit one and two.

The cameras can even catch the movement of a spider. They come with a hard disk which can save clippings for three months and alarm as well. The staff, as an additional security feature, now have to provide finger print identification apart from scratching the cards.
The CCTVs have also been installed at the time office, operating island and zone - 3.

Since lack of CCTVs hampered the probe into the incident, the measure aims to prevent any such damages in future. Meanwhile, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre has been requested to send senior scientists to assist in the investigation. However, none has arrived even though the assurance of sending two scientists was given  about one-and-a-half month ago.

Uttar Kannada SP Raman Gupta told Deccan Herald that if they do not find any lead in the investigation, they may hand over the matter to Central Bureau of Investigation.

It may be recalled that a team was constituted under Karwar DySP to investigate into the heavy water contamination. The team has recorded the statement of over 200 workers so far.
