Rahul's ISI remark triggers row

Last Updated 25 October 2013, 20:16 IST

Muslim clerics and the Samajwadi Party have reacted sharply to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s comment that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was in touch with Muslim youths whose families were displaced after the recent communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar.

“Rahul is speaking like leaders of a communal party...his remarks have hurt riot victims as well as every patriotic Muslim in the country,” senior cleric Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahali said here.

Firangimahali, who is a member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, said the Muslims must condemn Gandhi’s remark. “Rahul must withdraw his remark and tender an apology to the Muslims,” he said.

Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadique said the Muslims in India loved the country and were patriotic.

Another cleric, Maulana Saif Abbas, said people were politicising the communal riots.
