Rajasthan ex-minister held for rape

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested former Rajasthan minister Babulal Nagar on charges of raping and assaulting  a 35-year-old woman.

CBI sleuths had called Nagar for questioning on Friday at the Circuit House. They grilled him for about six hours, finally arresting him around 6 pm, said officials. He would undergo medical examination and would be produced in a designated court on Saturday, said CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad. While entering the Circuit House on Friday morning, Nagar told reporters he had full confidence in the CBI probe and that he had given his statements related to the case in writing to the agency.

Nagar, who has denied the charges, said he would cooperate with the agency in the investigation and would not hide the truth.

The Sodala police station had booked Nagar on the directive of a local court for allegedly raping and beating up a woman on September 11 at his official residence in Jaipur, after calling her there on the pretext of giving her a job.

The CBI on October 9 took over the probe from the Rajasthan Police, which had registered the case against Nagar, following which he resigned as the minister for dairy, Khadi and rural industries. Nagar was suspended from the Congress by the party high command last month.

Earlier, a CBI team had forensically examined Nagar's official residence, the scene of the crime. It had also recorded the Victim's statement at her residence.

Nagar is the fourth Congress MLA from Rajasthan facing charges of  sexual assault.

Former minister Mahipal Maderna and ex-MLA Malkhan Singh are in jail in connection with the kidnapping and murder of a nurse named Bhanwari Devi.  Another Congress MLA, Udai Lal Anjana from Nimbahera, also faces rape charges and is being investigated by the state CID (Crime Branch).

It is a setback for the ruling Congress, especially in an election year.
