Police rule out outsider role in Kakanagar double murder

Last Updated 26 October 2013, 21:01 IST

Police ruled out the possibility of outsider involvement in the murder of senor government officer K Vijay Kumar and his banker wife, Sita, after they recovered fingerprints of Sita from a knife.

It was also found that the couple, found dead on Friday, were undergoing treatment for depression for the past one year over their floundering marriage.

Kumar, 57, who was from Tamil Nadu, was found dead with his throat slit, while 51-year-old Sita was found hanging in their first-floor government apartment at Kaka Nagar D-Block. Kumar, a Joint Secretary-rank officer of Indian Cost Accounts Service’s 1983 batch, was posted as Adviser (Cost) with Ministry of Food Processing Industries.

As per preliminary post-mortem report, Kumar died before Sita. Sources said Kumar’s death took place in the morning while Sita died in the afternoon. According to the report, Kumar was stabbed twice in his chest and the throat was slit with a sharp-edged weapon. “It hints that Sita killed Kumar and then hanged herself,” sources said.

It is claimed that Kumar and Sita were often involved in heated arguments possibility due to marital discord and were undergoing treatment for the past one year. “Sita was being treated for anger management and Kumar for depression,” sources added. Sita had also installed CCTV cameras in the house through which she used to monitor activities of the domestic helps. The cameras, however, displayed only live images and had no recording option.

On Saturday, Kumar’s 22-year-old daughter Varanya gave her statement to police and confirmed her mother’s eccentric behaviour. Whenever Sita went out of home, she assumed that someone was following her and when Varanya spoke to someone over phone, Sita used to assume that Varanya was having an affair and would ask questions about it. Sita used to suspect her husband as well.

Sources further said Sita had also installed a mobile phone jammer in her room. Irritated over her mother’s behaviour, Varanya was staying away from her family for some time. She was staying with her friend in a separate house and had gone on a tour to Jaipur.

On the day of the incident, she spoke to her mother at 12.30 pm and that was the last time when she spoke to her. Varanya tried to call after an hour but Sita did not receive the call.

The deaths came to light after Varanya returned home from the trip at 4:30 pm and found the main door locked from inside. She called her parents on their mobile phones but there was no response. Her repeated knocks on the door also went unanswered.

Police later broke open the main door and found the bodies of Kumar and Sita. The family has been staying at the house for the past four years. All the doors of the house were found locked from inside and there were no signs of forced entry or ransacking.
