Samiti warns against forceful recovery of farm loans

Last Updated 19 November 2009, 18:52 IST

“Both the cooperative and the commercial banks should try to convince the farmers to get their loans paid back. If they go for forceful recovery, they will face strong protests,” he told press persons after chairing a meeting of the Samiti here on Thursday.

All political parties spoke about waiving off the farmers’ loans before the elections, but they have not kept their promise. Though it is one-and-half year after the new government formed, nobody speaks about the loan waiver, he criticised.

The farmers are in crisis due to heavy rains and yellow leaf disease. They are not in a condition to pay back the loans, he noted.

“All loan waivers announced until now, are favourable to the rich class. The honest poor farmers have not got any justice. Late Indira Gandhi made the poor to own lands through Land Reforms, but the nowadays governments are forcing them to sell their small holdings to the rich, by making their economic state unstable,” Duggappa Gowda analysed.

He said the Samiti welcomes the move of the Central government to prevent the industrialists from using the farm land for industrialisation.

“The Samiti will press for the withdrawal of the report submitted by the former Commissioner of Horticulture regarding discouraging areca crop,” he added.

Devendra Bemmane, Gadikere Parameshwar, Ajith, Hinachi Ashok, Muttur Madan, Vijayendra Balaga, T V Nagaraj, Halasinkatte Prasanna, Thimmappa, Hanchinahaklu Arun and Shisale Naman of Raitha Hitharakshana Samiti were present at the press meet.
