Woman strangled, body found in box

Last Updated 20 November 2013, 21:26 IST

A woman was found dead in an iron box dumped on the premises of east Delhi’s Anand Vihar Inter State Bus Terminal and outside Anand Vihar Metro station on Wednesday morning, police said.

The victim is yet to be identified but is believed to be aged around 22-25 years and apparently married. According to police, efforts were made to conceal her identity as several injury marks were found on the body.

A call was made to the police control room at around 10.30am reporting an unclaimed blue box. A police team along with bomb and dog squads were sent to the spot. “The box was found locked. When opened, a woman’s body was recovered,” a police officer said. Investigating officers suspect that she was strangled.

A case of murder and causing disappearance of evidence has been registered with Madhu Vihar police station, and the body sent for post-mortem at Lal Bahadur Shashtri Hospital. “The victim has not been identified, but we have got vital clues for her identification,” the officer added.

She was wearing a black and yellow salwar-kameez and has PK tattooed on her right arm. She wore a mangalsutra, and there is a line of vermillion on her head along with bangles in both hands. “From her appearance, it is clear that she was married,” the officer said.

As the body was not in a decomposed state, police suspect that she was murdered late on Tuesday. However, the exact cause and time of death will be clear only from the post-mortem report.

Some vendors present near the spot told police that they noticed the box in the morning, which would mean that it was kept there sometime in the morning.
Police have also got hold of CCTV footage from the Metro station. “Some cameras cover the spot where the body was found,” the officer added.

Police are scanning the footage to find out who left the box there.

Usually, an unidentified body is kept at a mortuary for 72 hours. Beyond that period, it is cremated after an autopsy is conducted. Police have informed nearby police stations about the body in a bid to identify the victim.
