Bring on the bling

Last Updated 21 November 2013, 14:38 IST

A little dazzle in the house can add that much-needed sense of sophistication and opulence that spells richness and glamour.

But you need not be rich or famous to live in luxury. Here are a few simple and affordable solutions to live amidst glitz and shine.

The first and most important thing to note while adding bling to your room is to make sure it is understated; do not overdo it as there is a fine line between ‘luxurious’ and ‘tacky’. In other words, dress to impress but do not overwhelm your interiors with too much of anything.

You don’t need to try too hard to find ways of adding sparkle to your room. Stick to the basics. You can sew up or buy a couple of mismatched shiny cushions or pillows. Sequins work best and are an affordable option. If you have the means, then experiment with silk or custom embroidered fabric. Remember to decorate gradually, slowly replacing the old and smaller items with more decorative versions. There should be a contrast between your cushions and where you decide to place them. For example, while adding blingy covers, make sure your sofas or beds have neutral undertones.

You may add cushions of various shapes and sizes to a single area of your room. Bright cushions can add colour to the dull hues of your sofa or bed fabric. Whatever be the colour scheme, most home décor stores have plenty of cushion choices to choose from.
Add another layer to your cushion fabric with textural rugs or bright shimmery monotones. Choose a rug to complement your cushions. Rugs provide comfort and coziness. It can also add depth and volume to your room. You can choose from plain rugs to woven rugs which come in a variety of colours and patterns. You can add rugs to a wooden floor or to any tiled floor. Use a non-slip pad to avoid slippage.

Glasses and mirrors can be used in various designs to bring shine into your room. Use crystal glasses of different accents to accessorise your space.

Glass candlestands and small definitive decoratives can also be used. If budget is not a constraint, then you can decorate your plain cushions and rugs with small crystal highlights.

Choose a single piece of furniture and add some mirrors to it to make it a smooth conversation starter. You can also mix plain mirrors in varied lengths along one side of the wall. While lighting up your room, be creative. You can choose from custom lighting to general and central lighting. However, layered lighting adds function and description and is one of the most upcoming design trends of the 21 Century. A chandelier can take the glamour quotient up a notch. In some cases, the chandelier can even act as the star feature of the room.

Bringing the right kind of lighting to your surrounding spaces can be a definite mood setter, so use dimmers wherever possible, especially in the living, dining and bedrooms.

Shine and sparkle

Select an accent wall and paint it with a shade of grey or silver to act as a backdrop for the single most important piece of furniture you want to highlight. The other walls can be painted with neutral colours. The sofa or bed covers can be draped in soft colours and textures; white and beige work well here.

Add pillows, throws and rugs in playful tones of blue, red, purple or orange. They do not necessarily have to be matching each other. The idea is that they must complement each other.

Satin and metallic embellishments are the best to use. Add the right amount of lighting to your room and especially highlight the accent wall. Invest in some accessories that can add style to your room. Candlestands, glasses and statues are the right way to go.
These accessories can be the finishing touches to your design dramatics.

Buy inexpensive accessories that you can keep changing and shuffling around. While it is important to make perfect aesthetic sense while designing your space, it is equally important to design it according to its functionality. Select an appropriate colour scheme that is both tasteful and balanced according to the main function of the room.

Do not use too many bold colours in any one particular room. For example, the colour scheme of a child’s room is more lively and colourful and cannot be used for a library.
De-clutter your room of old and worn out furnishings and accessories. Organise your room tactfully. Invest in a few good quality furnishings that you intend on using for a longer period of time. Try to imagine how it would look a couple of years down the line. Don’t be over the top or outlandish in selecting big furniture.

It is not very difficult to make your home look sassy and eloquent. You can live just like any celebrity you fondly
admire.
