Dhanusri, a two-and-half-year-old daughter of Suresh and Nagalakshmi, was run over by a mini lorry transporting LPG gas cylinder near Rajapalya, Hoodi Circle.
Dhanusri, along with her mother, who is five months pregnant, was on her way to Ayyappa Temple in KR Puram to join her father Suresh when the accident occurred. They were being driven to the temple by Nagalakshmi’s brother on his bike when a speeding lorry rammed it from behind. Dhanusri, seated on the fuel tank, was thrown off the vehicle and came under the wheels of the lorry.
Nagalakshmi, who suffered head injury, was taken to Nimhans for treatment, where doctors declared her out of danger, according to her brother Suresh, who escaped with minor injuries.
Her husband Suresh, who runs a provision store in Whitefield, in preparation to visit Shabarimala, had been to Ayyappa Temple where his family was to join him.
According to Suresh, the brother, who bears the same name as Nagalakshmi’s husband, even as he was making way to let the furiously honking and speeding lorry to pass by, the driver too veered to the left, given the bad condition of the road, and rammed the bike.
Angry local residents who nabbed the lorry driver Kumaraswamy handed him over to the police and staged a protest over the incident and set fire to tyres, before being dispersed by police.
K R Puram traffic police have seized the vehicle and registered a case against the driver.
In another incident, one-and-a-half year old Aliya Sultana, daughter of Babu, was mowed down by a speeding water tanker in Maruthi Nagar near Kogilu Gate, Yelahanka, on Tuesday afternoon.
Babu hails from Yadagiri district and is a lorry driver in the City. His wife died of ill health five months ago.
The girl, being bathed in front of the house, was left unattended, as her grandmother went inside the house to fetch a soap bar, when a water tanker, that had come to fill a water sump next door while reversing, ran over the girl.
The driver, abandoning the vehicle, fled the scene. Yelahanka traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.
