Unusual concepts spring forth

Creativity was at its peak at the ‘Open Day’ event held by the students of L’institut Superieur des Arts Appliques (LISAA) School of Design recently.

The first batch of students of the Institute wowed the visitors with their out-of the-box creations during the two-day event held at the college.

One of the impressive concepts included the use of ice-cream sticks to create a model of a building.

The 18-year-old undergraduate students had made these works over the last four months.

Saumya Tandon, a first-year student said, “It’s all about thinking differently. When we came in, we were quite raw, but now, a couple of months into the course, we find that we have improved a lot. In fact, our faculty members have really pushed us to think creatively.”

She added, “Each of us has worked with all the materials. In fact, the objective of the course is that we are able to work with every material with the same ease.”

Agreeing that it is challenging, Deependra Verma, another student said, “At the end of the day, we are a satisfied lot. Of course, there is a lot of hard work that goes in but it’s all worth it.”

Pointing to her creation using ice-cream sticks, Umme Kulsum, another student said, “We were told to build any building using ice-cream sticks. It was suggested that we could use any famous building as an inspiration and re-construct asimilar one with ice-cream sticks. While some of us have been inspired by real buildings, some others have made it based on shapes. For instance, I’ve been inspired by triangles.”

Sooraj Seshan, another student said, “Through my creation that’s what I’m trying to depict. In fact, I’ve tried to include everything I love, including my fondness for doodling.”

He added, “It’s a wonderful experience especially since I’m getting a chance to showcase my creativity after having done four years of engineering. It feels good to do crazy stuff.”

Avi Keswani, managing director of the Institute, said, “The ‘Open Day’ was meant to exhibit art works that the students had worked on in the past four months. We will be having these events every semester. The display items will be varied and new in concept every time depending on where the students are on the learning curve that we have projected for them.”
