Transport dept awaits fresh list of red beacon vehicles

A day after the Supreme Court’s rap regarding the usage of red beacons atop vehicles across the country, the State Transport department is gearing up to take stringent action against those misusing red beacons in the City.

To prevent misuse of red beacons by local politicians, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said they may be used only by those holding constitutional posts. It added that emergency vehicles like ambulances, police vehicles and fire tenders should use blue beacon.

Earlier, the Transport department had come up with a list of vehicles on which red and blue beacons should be used. However, in the light of fresh directions from the apex court, they will now wait for the State government’s directions for any changes in the list.
