Obesity harmful for kidney function

Researchers have shown that declines in kidney function are detectable long before the emergence of other obesity-related diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
First author Vanessa Grubbs, MD, UCSF assistant adjunct professor of medicine, and senior author Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, professor of medicine, led a team that analyzed 10 years’ worth of health data from CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults), a national multi-center research project.

The 2,891 CARDIA participants included in the study were categorized according to four ranges of body mass index (BMI): normal weight, overweight, obese, and extremely obese.

At the beginning of the time period studied, the patients averaged 35 years of age and all had normal kidney function in the normal range, though higher-BMI patients were at the lower end of that range.Kidney function diminished over time in all participants, but the decline was significantly greater and more rapid in heavier patients, and appeared to stem exclusively from BMI.

Grubbs said that when they accounted for diabetes, high blood pressure, and inflammatory processes, the body mass index was still a predictor of kidney function decline, so there was something unique about just being too large that in and of itself affected kidney function even before the onset of frank kidney disease.

Acupuncture  for tonsillectomy pain

A researcher has revealed that medical acupuncture is effective in reducing pain after tonsillectomy surgery and can be used as an alternative to codeine.

Dr. James Ochi, a San Diego pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon conducted a study using acupuncture instead of codeine for pain relief for his tonsillectomy patients.
“I’ve been using medical acupuncture for years to help my patients suffer less pain after surgery. Now that it is unsafe to use codeine for these kids, I wanted to see if acupuncture without the use of narcotics was helpful for my patients,” Dr. Ochi said. “Acupuncture in general has been shown to be effective in reducing pain, is safe and can be done quickly at minimal cost.”

Prior to acupuncture treatment, patients or their parents reported a mean pain level of 5.52 out of 10.  After about 15 minutes of acupuncture the pain level dropped to 1.92, a statistically significant difference. Furthermore, parents on average estimated the duration of benefit from the acupuncture to last about 2 and a half days. No adverse effects were reported as a result of the drug-free treatments.

Exercise to lessen adverseeffects of antidepressants

A new psychology study has found that moderately intense physical activity can significantly help women who suffer from sexual dysfunction resulting from antidepressants.

Tierney Lorenz, an Indiana University post-doctoral research fellow who conducted the study at The University of Texas at Austin with Psychology Professor Cindy Meston, said that the findings have important implications for public health.During the first three weeks of the study, the participants engaged in sexual activity with no exercise. In the second experiment, the participants completed either three weeks of exercise immediately before sexual activity, or three weeks of exercise not timed to it.

They all also engaged in sexual activity and 30 minutes of strength training and cardio exercise three times a week.

The two groups then reversed roles in the last experiment. Women who exercised regularly were asked to add three extra sessions to their workout routines.
The results showed that 30 minutes of exercise just before intercourse can reduce the effect of the libido-dulling drugs.

According to the findings, committing to a regular exercise routine improved orgasm function in all women. However, those who exercised immediately before sex experienced significantly stronger libidos and overall improvements in sexual functioning.
Moderately intense exercise activates the sympathetic nervous system, which facilitates blood flow to the genital region.

Antidepressants have been shown to depress this system. Scheduling regular sexual activity and exercise may be an effective tool for alleviating these adverse side effects, Lorenz said.
