Engineers warned against bogus works

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner M Lakshminarayana on Monday warned engineers of harsh punishment if they burdened the Palike with “unwanted works,” as the Palike braces to execute 1,367 ward-level works from December 23.

Speaking at an event held to issue work orders to contractors, Lakshminarayana lashed out at engineers who prepared bogus estimates resulting in misuse of funds.

“I will suspend you if you allow bogus works. No pressure will work on me,” he added.

The works include construction of drains, asphalting of roads, construction and repair of pavements, maintenance of parks and playgrounds, streetlights and filling potholes.

“It is known to all that Palike is running short of funds. If you prepare estimates for unwanted works, you will be committing a sin against it. Corporators should avoid pushing for such works to keep their image clean among masses,” said Lakshminarayana.
The BBMP recently floated tenders for 2,726 works worth Rs 494 crore but, contractors responded to only about half of them.

A H Basavaraju of BBMP standing committee for ward works has announced that the Palike would call for tenders for the third time and if no one responds, then the work would be entrusted to Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited.

Mayor B S Satyanarayana said his initiative for a clean KR Market had led to some positive results. The goal, however, is to take the cleanliness at the KR Market to the level of super-markets and malls in the City, he said.

“We have asked private companies to keep the entire KR Market and its surroundings clean,” he added.
