Last Updated 19 December 2013, 18:17 IST

The State government on Thursday failed to get an assurance from sugar mill owners to pay the State-fixed price of Rs 2,500 per tonne of sugar cane for farmers.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had invited representatives of sugar mill owners for talks to discuss the issue at the former’s Home Office ‘Krishna’ in Bangalore on Thursday.

Sugar Minister Prakash Hukkeri and Cooperation Minister H S Mahadevaprasad were also present.“The meeting was held as per the directions of the High Court. However, it remained inconclusive. We will hold one more round of talks in the days to come,” Siddaramaiah told reporters after the meeting.

Sugar mill owners had approached the Court over the State government fixing the price for sugarcane at Rs 2,500 per tonne. The sugar mill owners are said to have expressed their inability to pay the price fixed by the government due to increasing production cost.
