Prez wants efforts to remove inequalities

President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday called for concerted efforts to remove inequalities from the lives of scheduled castes and tribes in the country. He was speaking at a function in connection with the 150th birth anniversary of social reformer and Dalit leader Ayyankali in Kochi.

He said though “disabilities” had been removed by law, prejudice, inequality and injustice persisted among the scheduled castes. The change in status and living conditions of scheduled castes and tribes since the adoption of the Constitution has been enormous but far from sufficient.

“We must invest our energies into the removal of all vestiges of disabilities from the lives of the Scheduled Castes, Tribes and Backward Classes. We must ensure creation of a society in which minorities can live in peace and do not have to fear or suffer deprivation,” he said.

Highlighting Ayyankali’s fights to ensure social justice for the Dalits and his challenge to the caste codes, the President said the reformer’s message remained relevant as long as prejudices and biases prevailed in the society.
