Odisha gets UN praise for managing Phailin

The United Nations (UN) on Friday appreciated the manner in which the Odisha government handled cyclone Phailin that ravaged the southern and coastal districts of the state in October this year.

Special representative of the UN Secretary-General for disaster risk reduction Margareta Wahlstrom presented a citation in this regard to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at an official function held at the state secretariat here on Friday. Led by Wahlstrom , a three-member UN team paid a visit to Ganjam district on Saturday, where they interacted with cyclone victims, besides the district administration and NGOs.
Southern Odisha was worst hit, with the cyclone having made its landfall at the port town of Gopalpur in Ganjam district.

The international body was particularly impressed by the state government’s decision to evacuate large numbers of people before Phailin hit the coast, minimising the number of casualties to a large extent. “The state government’s fast response was remarkable. It was a fantastic achievement. They did excellent work,” the UN representative told reporters during an informal chat at the secretariat.
