Renovated CP waits for festive crowd now

Last Updated 22 December 2013, 21:23 IST

This Christmas, Delhiites will get a present they have been waiting for over three years. The newly renovated Connaught Place, one of the Delhi’s premier shopping centres, will be inaugurated on Wednesday as a part of the New Delhi Municipal Council’s centenary celebrations, a senior official said Sunday.

But the officials have not decided who would cut the inaugural ribbon.

“We are still thinking who to invite for the opening the renovated Connaught Place, which is scheduled on December 25,” a senior engineer looking after the project said.

The week-long celebrations will begin Monday with a series of events such as shopping carnival and food festival. The NDMC has missed many deadlines since the work started three years ago.

The council has also decided to hold a two-week-long shopping festival in association with the New Delhi Traders’ Association starting Monday. A concert has been organised to keep Delhiites in a festive mood.

The celebrations will see discounts, the official added. The food festival to be organised from December 23 to 29 will give  gastronomic delight to foodies in the capital offering a diverse range of items from different states and regions.

The NDMC Convention Centre will host a film festival till December 27. Other events include a nomadic fair and a vintage car rally on December 29, followed by a kite festival two days later. There will be a musical event by Ability Unlimited and Chand Nizami on January 2 and 3.
