Two legislators belonging to the Janata Dal (S) staged a sit-in in front of the chief minister’s office at the Vidhana Soudha on Friday, seeking the removal of Higher Education Minister R V Deshpande from the Cabinet.

Members of the Legislative Council Puttanna and Marithibbegowda also demanded action against Rajneesh Goel, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, and H U Talwar, Director, Technical Education, in connection with the alleged irregularities in the recruitment of professors to engineering colleges.

The legislators urged the chief minister to provide grant-in-aid to all the private Kannada medium schools in the wake of four protesting teachers attempting suicide in the City on Thursday.

The members said that it was brought to the notice of the government – through letters to the chief minister, the Higher Education minister and the chief secretary – the irregularities in the appointment of 90 professors to government engineering colleges and illegally paying them Rs 10 crore as arrears. “So far, no action was initiated against the persons responsible for this,” they said.

They said the officials were responsible for the appointment of some professors in violation of the norms of the All India Council for Technical Education.

Misappropriation alleged

Alleging that the principal secretary, Higher Education, was directly involved in misappropriation, the two leaders said they had obtained information through RTI in this connection, and warned that it would be released to the media shortly.

They also lashed out at the State government over the four teachers attempting suicide. “The government must stop making false promises that the issue pertaining to grant-in-aid to schools would be resolved within two days, because no files have been cleared so far,” they said.
