Robbers meet with mishap; one killed

Early Tuesday morning, around 4.30 am, Sreenivas, an IBM employee and a resident of Royal Shelters Arcade, Devarachikanahalli, alighted from a Chennai bus at Bommanahalli stop. He started walking towards home as he could not find a transport. After crossing the Bommanahalli-Kodichikanahalli junction, two unidentified men on an old scooter bumped into the techie and threatened him at knife point, forcing him to hand over his expensive mobile phone and wallet.

The duo snatched the valuables and left the techie free. Within seconds after they left, Sreenivas raised an alarm. The duo got scared and the rider decided to scoot full throttle. However, while trying to take a turn in the same speed, they went under the wheels of a tempo.

The rider Nayeem (20) died on the spot while his associate Mohammed Zakir Hussain (29) is being treated at Victoria hospital for multiple fractures. The pillion rider, Zakir, a goods tempo driver, in his statement to the Madiwala police  said, "Nayeem, a resident of Arafat Nagar near Halegudaddahalli was addicted to  chain snatching and robbery. Since I don't have a place to live, I sleep in the vehicle. On the ill-fated day, during the wee hours, Nayeem woke me up and forced me to accompany him.”

"The moment the victim raised his voice, he got scared and tried cruising but lost control of the vehicle as it skidded. He fell on to the right and went straight under the wheels while I was lucky to be grounded on the other side," said Zakir.

Interestingly, while Sreenivas was on his way to the police station to lodge a complaint, he saw the accident and even identified the two. Meanwhile, the techie’s mobile phone and wallet are in the possession of the Madiwala police.
