Cabinet nod for 58 new medical colleges

The government on Thursday a proposal to establish 58 new medical colleges at district hospitals in “deficient” states with intake capacity of 100 MBBS seats in each on Thursday.

The proposal of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare got clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs at its meeting presided over by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“This will result in an increase of about 5,800 seats,” a government statement said.
The total cost of establishment of one medical college under the centre-sponsored scheme has been estimated to be about Rs 189 crore.
