Books beckon at Nehru Maidan

After a long gap of 13 years, the National Book Trust (NBT) has kicked off its 9-day Mangalore book fair in the Port City with a bang.

Around 40 publishers from across the country have put up 60 stalls at Nehru Maidan displaying a wide array of books in five languages--English, Hindi, Kannada, Tulu and Malayalam. Books of various genre--fiction, non-fiction, autobiography, science, poetry, translation, life success stories and what not--are neatly stacked.

From the recently launched A P J Abdul Kalam's "Squaring the circle, 7 steps to Indian renaissance" to P Sundarayya's autobiography, Dan Brown's mystery thriller novel, "Inferno", Pakistani teenaged education crusader Malala Yousafzai's world best-seller "I'am Malala", "The complete works of Sherlock Holmes", latest edition of Jiddu Krishnamurthy's "Think of these things", "The world's latest top 100 hotels"...bookworms have every reason to throng Nehru Maidan.

Neerja Singh edited, "Nehru-Patel-agreement within differences. Select documents and correspondence (1933-1950)" will find some interesting reading in the current political scenario where two major political parties recently had a slugfest claiming over the legacy of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. A shelve of subject specific books are there for media personnel as well as students--"Breaking ground: Journey into the media and out" by Rami Chhabra, Kuldip Nayyar authord "Beyond the lines" to name a few.

There is a 10 per cent discount on all the books. Apart from books, CDs, spray pen, magic mirror, glass magic etc are also put up targeting children.

Distrit-in-charge Minister Ramanath Rai inaugurated the event being conducted in collaboration with Konkani language and cultural foundation and Mangalore Vishwa Konkani Kendra.

MLA J R Lobo presided over the programme. Vishwa Konkani Kendra President Basti Vaman Shenoy, NBT Regional Manager Amit Karky, Kannada Sahitya Parishat district President Pradeep Kumar Kalkura and Gokuldas Prabhu spoke. The book fair will be there up to January 12.
