PARTY QUEEN

'The songs I sing bring out the best in me'

Shefali Alvares’ peppy voice has made her the queen of Bollywood dance music. Her energetic numbers like ‘Party On My Mind’, Ratta Mar and Batameez Dil have helped her become a household name.

Her performance as part of the ‘Alive India Concert’ saw Bangaloreans coming in huge numbers. “It is always a lot of fun to perform here. In fact, I really appreciate the fact that I got an opportunity to share the stage with another artiste. This does not happen in many places and is a very different concept. It’s a great venture and helps two artistes from different genres bond and understand each other’s music,” says the singer who performed with fellow Bollywood singer Divya Kumar during the show.

Ask her about the kind of music that she wants to sing and pat comes the reply, “My forte is disco. I enjoy singing youthful, energetic and party numbers. However, I don’t party much. These kind of songs are similar to who I am and hence, I can relate to them,” she describes. What does she have in store for her fans in 2014? “I am going to sing a lot of cabaret numbers this year and the audience can also hear my latest item number, Chumma Chaati. It’s a fun song and I am quite excited about it,” she quips.

Coming from a jazz background and fitting into Bollywood music might be a challenge for many but not Shefali. She has not only adapted herself beautifully to the genre but also rendered some chartbusters.

“I belong to a jazz background and it was quite difficult for me sing in Hindi as I was not familiar with the intricacies of the language. It is sad that we don’t have any jazz numbers in Bollywood anymore. Many songs in the past have been inspired from jazz and it used to be extremely popular. I am a huge fan of this genre,” informs Shefali.

Nothing comes without hard work and she has worked hard on her diction and voice for her songs. “I did put in a lot of effort and still find all of this very new. I had to go for rehearsals and do my riyaaz on a regular basis. Performing live and singing in a recording studio are two different things. I like the fact that I am singing more EDM songs as I don’t quite fit in to the romantic or Sufi genre.

The songs that I sing have a western tinge to them and that brings out the best in me,” she says adding that performing on stage is what excites her. “I live to perform and live music is very powerful. Something takes over me when I am on stage and I just love that feeling,” sums up Shefali.
