'I want people to react to me'

When she got a call from popular film-maker Sunil Darshan, little did Hasleen Kaur know that she would land herself her first Bollywood movie, titled Karle Pyaar Karle. And now, the ‘Miss India Earth 2011’ is all set for the release of this film opposite Sunil’s son Shiv Darshan. The pretty model-turned-actress spoke to Metrolife on her background, her favourite artistes and her experience in Bollywood.

The search for the leading lady of this film had been on for almost a year till the makers found Hasleen. “It all started with Sunil calling me and asking me to meet him. So I went casually as I wasn’t expecting a role. But all he did was speak to me and offered me the role even without an audition. Maybe he wanted to see me in my natural self and I fit the mental image he had,” she recalls.

Hasleen plays the role of Preet in the film, which is touted to be an action-packed romance. “She is an urban, confident girl with a very strong personality. She has a ‘you-can’t-mess-with-me’ attitude. Like the girls of today, she is fearless and can put other people in trouble,” she explains. Ask her if she could relate to her role and she says, “Totally! I come from Delhi where you need to have a strong exterior and body language so that no one can take you for a ride. This is true even in the world of modelling, where one can be exploited easily.” However, as the film goes forward, Hasleen rues that the audience gets to see a vulnerable side of her character. “You end up loving her,” she exclaims.

With a number of Miss Indias entering the industry, is it true that the beauty pageant is a ticket to Bollywood?  She agrees and adds, “The contest gives girls like me the visibility. My dad is from the army and I had never even been to Mumbai before the pageant. It’s a platform that gets you recognised and for a model, it’s the best thing that can happen. With people knowing my name, things became easier. Yet I struggled for two years before bagging this film,” she explains.

All praises for her co-star Shiv Darshan, Hasleen says she learnt a lot from him. “He is a perfectionist and a great actor. I can’t believe he is debuting in this film as nothing about him is amateur. He has worked really hard on himself and trained tremendously,” she notes.

Her favourite artistes are Kajol and Madhuri Dixit and she would love to meet them someday. “Kajol is really spontaneous while Madhuri can dance with her face. Before shooting for a song, I used to keep looking at her songs on Youtube,” she notes. “I have been to events where they have been present, but have never spoken to them. I get nervous,” she laughs.

Hasleen loves to travel in her free time and has been to Bangalore many a time. “Coming from Delhi, which is a city of extreme weather, I love the weather here. Besides, I love going to the UB City with friends. I also have friends staying in Indiranagar,” she notes. Currently on a contract, Hasleen hasn’t signed more films. “Though people are approaching me with scripts, I want people to react to me after watching the film. In the promos, there is very little of my work,” she sums up.
