Cop shoots into minor's mouth

A 16-year-old boy, an accused in a theft case, was seriously wounded after he was “accidentally” shot at by a police officer during an inquiry.

Police sources said the incident occurred at Neelangarai Police Station near here on Tuesday night when the inspector (crime) was questioning the boy and the officer’s pistol went off “accidentally”.

The boy is reportedly in a critical condition in a private hospital, where he is being treated. The youngest in the household, the boy was picked by the Neelankarai police in connection with a investigation into a “hundi” theft case in the area.

During interrogation, inspector Pushparaj forced the boy to admit to his crime by pulling his duty revolver and kept near the mouth of the accused . However, when the boy moved back out of fear, the bullet pierced through his neck.

After various human rights organisations gathered near the police station and staged protest, the state government had initiated an inquiry by revenue divisional officer into the “accidental firing”. Meanwhile, inspector Pushparaj was suspended for his act. Child rights activists said according to the act, it is illegal to detain a juvenile in the police station no matter what their crime is.
