JOIN USThe Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) appears to have captured people’s imagination with its outstanding political debut in Delhi. So much so that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his party seem very popular ahead of a kite-flying festival in Gujarat.
With Uttarayan only a few days away, politically savvy kitemakers are churning out merchandise to suit the inclinations of kite-flying enthusiasts. And going by the current wave, kitemakers are betting that there would be a demand for kites with Kejriwal images.
So far, they appear to have read their customers right as the latter continue to seek out Kejriwal or AAP-themed kites. “Narendra Modi” kites are also in demand in the home state of the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate.
Sammer Pathan, a kitemaker in Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area, said: “Demand for kites with Narendra Modi images of course continue to be in vogue, but customers are asking for kites with images of both. Initially, we had made small kites as show pieces with images of Kejriwal and we soon realised that the small kites were being bought to make a string of kites,” said Pathan. This was when kitemakers realised that even bigger Kejriwal kites images would sell.
Another kitemaker, Yusuf Khan, said kite flying enthusiasts are interested in variety and want to be trendy. “Flyers have placed orders for scores of kites with Kejriwal and Modi images, and there are some who want only with Kejriwal or only with Modi images,” he said.
While the kite makers continue to sell their politically relevant wares, it will be interesting to watch whether Kejriwal or Modi will rule the skies this Uttarayan in Gujarat.
