MGNREGS plaints may be addressed via ombudsman

 The government is contemplating addressing all complaints pertaining to implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) through the institution of ombudsman, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil said on Friday.

Speaking at a workshop on MGNREGS, Patil said the government plans to refer to the institution of ombudsman complaints pertaining to misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 50,000 and above. The ombudsman will have to probe and file reports within 15 days of filing the complaints, he said and added that the government will take suitable action based on the recommendation of the ombudsman, Patil said.

At present, complaints are being referred to the chief executive officers of zilla panchayats and taluk panchayats respectively. The government will takes steps to root out corruption and ensure transparency in the implementation of the scheme. Ombudsman will also play a key role in ensuring that the benefits of the scheme reach the beneficiaries.
