90 pc pickpockets at Metro stations are women

Over 100 persons, including 22 women, were arrested by police for picking pockets in Delhi Metro last year. An analysis has revealed that most of the victims were targeted at busy Metro stations such as Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Barakhamba Road and Central Secretariat during morning and evening peak hours.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is responsible for the security of the Delhi Metro, has apprehended more than 450 pickpockets during the year.

This year so far, of the pick pockets nabbed, about 90 per cent of them were women. In June, a total of 115 female pickpockets were nabbed as opposed to only one man. In October, 26 female pickpockets were nabbed, while no male thief was caught. On May 2, CISF had also caught eight women belonging to a gang at Kashmere Gate metro station.

According to CISF, most of the arrested women were well-educated, well-dressed and looked like any other commuter. “There is no specific look which can help identify them. In fact, some of them were dressed in business formals and pretending to work on their laptop,” a CISF officer said.

A gang of ‘blademaar thieves’ who used to target traders carrying cash in bags was also busted with the arrest of five persons by Kashmere Gate Metro police station in September.

The gang was caught red-handed by a 59-year-old man immediately after Rs 4.70 lakh cash was taken out from his bag on the premises of Rajiv Chowk metro station on September 27.

Police claim that the arrest of the gang members has brought down the number of theft cases in which bags were cut with blades.

It has also come to light that most of the pick pocketing cases were reported from stations and not moving trains. Police and CISF said that the pickpockets are usually caught with the help of CCTV footage, while security personnel also patrol stations in plain clothes.

In March, a 23-year-old girl pursuing MBA was also arrested for picking pocket.DH News Service
