Kerala airport may cause long-term damage

In another setback to promoters of the proposed private airport in Aranmula, an advocate commission appointed by the Kerala High Court said the airport could trigger environmental issues and affect ambience around the legendary Sree Parthasarathy Temple.

In his report to the HC, S Subhash Chand said the proposed greenfield airport in Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district could adversely impact future generations because of the environmental issues that the project brought with it.

With only about a kilometre separating the Sree Parthasarathy temple and the site for the proposed airport, the project could affect the atmosphere of calm and piety around the famous temple.

The commission has also warned of implications arising  from levelling hills and agricultural land for the project, reports said.

The airport, which is promoted by the KGS group, had recently hit headlines after a feasibility report done for the project reportedly suggested a reduction in the height of the mast of the temple.

The commission was appointed following a report by the Devaswom Ombudsman that recommended against alterations to the Tantric-stipulated temple mast.

The airport project, ever since its launch, has run into strong opposition from citizen groups and environmentalists.
