JOIN USA demonstration on South India’s first biogas plant was conducted on Monday at Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike head office.
Developed jointly by Maltose Agri Products Private Limited and Carbon Masters with the support of Ministry of New Renewable Energy, the plant has the capacity to process 20 metric tonnes(MT) of wet waste.
K Ramamurthy, Secretary of the Bruhat Bangalore Hoteliers' Association, maintained that presently, hotels and restaurants from north and east division have agreed to process their biodegradable waste at the plant in Huskur, Doddaballapur.
T Anand, Managing Director of Maltose Agri Products said: “The waste will be converted into biogas, which will be then compressed and bottled into cylinders. Compressed biogas will be sold to hotels and industrial users in the city. It can displace the use of LPG in variety of commercial applications.”
He added that the plant will increase its capacity over the next 12 months so that it can process up to 250 MT of food waste per day. The plant has been functioning on a small-scale for the past six months and is awaiting a no objection certificate from the local authority, hes aid.
Mayor B S Satyanarayana suggested setting up of crusher machines in all wards where wet waste could be converted into manure. He said this could reduce the quantity of waste going to landfills. The machine costs Rs 1.5 lakh, he said.
