Best known as the sibling of India-born fashion designer Anandjon Alaxander popularly known as Anand Jon,  Sanjana Jon is a designer in her own right. Metrolife caught up with her to learn what keeps her ticking, her journey to become a fashion designer, her upcoming projects, the craziness related to social activism, her experiences and her brother ‘Anand Jon’.

“I started my career working with Anand in New York. Together we created a jewellery line which was greatly appreciated by Iman David Bowie and Barbara Hershey. We worked on the men’s collection which was highlighted by Bruce Springsteen, Backstreet Boys,” says Sanjana recalling those unforgettable moments.Had she not been a designer then she would probably have been an activist, says Sanjana.

“I always wanted to be a full-time social activist as I love to work with people who are doing something for the betterment of society,” she says.

Presently going through a very tough phase of her life as her brother is serving a 59-year prison sentence in California, US on charges of sexual abuse, Sanjana is hopeful that good  times will return.

“I believe in God and when the right time will come, my brother will be back from California. He has played a huge role in my life. I am waiting for him,” says Sanjana.Any plans of entering Bollywood? “There are good people in Bollywood. I just look at Bollywood for charity-related projects. I have met Salman Khan in the past and he supported the ‘girl child, women empowerment’ cause,” she says.

The fashion designer is doing her bit to create awareness about female infanticide and women empowerment. “I have an event planned in New York  and am currently working on ‘Pride of India’ show, an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records with more than 500 models in a show who will be promoting  traditional and cultural wear of every State in India. It will also be a celebration of the girl child and in support of global human rights. I will also be bringing the current Miss Universe to India to support these causes and promote AIDS awareness.
