Four injured in Dharwad group clash

Tension prevailed for some time, following a clash between two groups and stone-throwing at Kamalapur area of the city on Tuesday afternoon. Four persons, including two policemen, were injured in the incident.

Police had to resort to mild caning to disperse the groups. The situation was brought under control after additional police force was deployed. However, tension continued to prevail in the city.

The two policemen and a couple of others who sustained injuries on the head were rushed to the district hospital for treatment. Doctors said all the four injured were out of danger.

Girl suffers injuries

Trouble started when two boys riding a motorcycle and waving a flag accidentally hit a girl on a bylane of Kamalapur area around noon. The girl fell down and suffered minor injuries. The residents of the bylane took the two boys to task for reckless driving and allegedly beat them up.

When the news spread, some people came in a group and threw stones at the group which had beaten up the boys.

The police arrived at the spot and even as they were trying to pacify the groups, stone pelting resumed, forcing the police to cane the troublemakers.

While the police were chasing away the groups, more people gathered and stray incidents of stone-throwing continued near a graveyard. The situation was brought under control with the deployment of additional police forces.

Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner Ravindra Prasad, Superintendent of Police Lokesh Kumar and other senior officers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Prasad said restoration of normalcy was his priority and action against those found guilty would be taken later. Patrolling would be intensified, he said.

Meanwhile, the procession as part of Eid Milad, organised by Anjuman-E-Islam from the Anjuman premises, passed off peacefully.

Heavy police security was provided to ensure that no untoward incident took place.
