As many as 35 elephants created havoc after entering an eucalyptus grove near Binnamangala in Gumalapura, Anekal taluk, on the border with Tamil Nadu on Tuesday.

Shyamnath Krishnappa, 55, who went to see the elephants, was flung by one of them with its trunk. Krishnappa was injured and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Forest officials said that the elephants were from Denkanikottai forest area in Tamil Nadu and had strayed out in search of food.

Villagers tried to chase the herd away by throwing stones at them and also by lighting a fire around the eucalyptus grove. The frightened elephants started running helter-skelter, injuring two youths. The Forest department officials later burst crackers to chase the herd back into the forest.
