Hassan tops mishap list for 2013

Hassan district has topped the list in the number of road mishaps and deaths, when compared to districts under Mysore zone. In all, 428 persons lost their lives in the year 2013, out of which 101 deaths have occurred in Bangalore-Mangalore highway.

Though the number of deaths has risen when compared to last two years, there is only a slight variation in figures, but the impact is more.

In the year 2011, 355 people were killed and 1,748 were injured in various accidents. While the number of deaths stood at 350 in 2012, the figures rose to 428 in 2013. The number of injured were 1,614, and 1,812, respectively.

Despite stern action taken by the Traffic police, the rise in number of deaths and injuries has left the department baffled.

According to statistics, the number of traffic violation cases and fine collection had gradually increased in 2013.

In 2011, the number of cases registered were 25,087, and a penalty of Rs 48,80,400 was collected.

The revenue generated in 2012 was Rs 60,06,100, with 28,056 traffic violation cases booked. A whopping Rs 87,72,200 was collected as fine from 36,725 cases registered in 2013.

Apart from this, fines have been collected under drunk and drive cases in other taluks, with the amount crossing Rs one crore, said Superintendent of Police Ravi D Channanavar.

Complaint box

The complaint boxes concept that was introduced in Hassan city last November to facilitate the public to drop their complaints, has evoked a good response. The system would be extended to other taluks too, the SP added.

Eight boxes were placed at various places including the SP’s office, on November 25, 2013.

28 complaints

Till date, 28 complaints have been received, with a majority of them being anonymous complaints.

The complaints included eve teasing, gambling, harassment to debtors by those who had paid them money, traffic problems and others.

Those who had mentioned their names and addresss, have been given information on the steps taken by Police department.

There were also some complaints on the Police department, which has been sent to the respective departments, the SP added.
