Last Updated 15 January 2014, 20:02 IST

Sporadic violence broke out in Gulbarga city and other places on Wednesday after the news of the death of daring sub-inspector (SI) Mallikarjun Bande in Hyderabad spread in the morning.

The district administration immediately promulgated prohibitory orders in Gulbarga city, Aland and Jewargi towns under Section 144 CrPC for 24 hours till 1 pm on Thursday.

Doctors at Yashoda Hospital in Hyderabad announced that Bande, who was critically injured on January 8 during an encounter with dreaded Mumbai-based criminal Munna here, died of bullet wounds at 12:40 am.

After initial treatment at Basaveshwar Hospital in Gulbarga, 40-year-old Bande was shifted to Hyderabad for specialised treatment. Bande is survived by his father, wife and two children.

As the news reached, a pall of gloom descended on Gulbarga and other parts of the district eclipsing the joyous celebrations of Sankranti festival. People started taking out processions with his posters and at some places, they resorted to stone-throwing, forcing police to chase them away.

A NEKRTC bus was set on fire near Khajuri in Aland taluk, Bande’s home town, and a few vehicles were stoned in Gulbarga. A bandh was observed in Gulbarga and Aland.

The body of Bande was brought to Gulbarga on Wednesday night. Deputy Commissioner N V Prasad told Deccan Herald that the body was placed at DAR Police Grounds here for a couple of hours for people to pay homage to the departed soul. Later, the mortal remains were handed over to the family for the final rites to be performed at Khajuri with full state honours.
