In UP, cricket match dispute claims life

Accused in hospital after being thrashed

A minor dispute during a cricket match claimed a life in an Uttar Pradesh village.

The incident occurred in UP’s Allahabad district, about 200 kilometres from here on Tuesday evening.

According to the reports, a youth identified as Manoj Yadav was thrown into the Ganges allegedly by three youths, who were members of the rival team. The police pressed the divers into service but the body could not be traced.

The alleged culprits were caught by the crowd, which thrashed them badly before handing them over to the police, reports said.

Police sources said that there was a dispute between the members of the two teams during a cricket match at Dumduma village in the district on Tuesday morning. The locals had then intervened and resolved the matter.

Three members of the rival team were roaming at a local fair on the banks of the Ganga, when they saw Manoj there with his brother. The fair had been organised to celebrate Makar Sankranti.

The two groups again had an altercation after which Manoj was allegedly dragged toward the river and thrown into it. Manoj's brother Monu Yadav tried to save him but he was overpowered.

A crowd that had gathered there managed to nab the alleged culprits and thrashed them. The three were identified as Raghu, Mohit Kumar and Sushil Kumar, sources said. They suffered serious injuries and were admitted to hospital.

Police arrived at the scene a little later and pressed divers into service to trace Manoj’s body, but they failed.
