He comes at 5 pm and quietly sets a small table in a green corner of the busy Kammanahalli Main Road. As he waits patiently with a smile on his face, the crowd gradually begins to gather around him.

If you go closer, you will be in for a delicious treat as this is the table of ‘Mister Momo Man’. Started by Suraj Subba five years ago, ‘Mister Momo Man’ serves, as its customers affirm, “the most delicious momos in the City”.

“I had always wanted to supply momos but didn’t know where to start,” explains Suraj, a soft-spoken man who hails from Darjeeling.

“I used to supply in restaurants and college canteens but wasn’t quite happy with the result. I even worked in a kitchen equipment store for a while,” he adds. But a suggestion by his wife’s manager to supply momos independently got him thinking. He started selling momos in places like Koramangala and Indiranagar.

“Those days, there wasn’t much of a crowd as people did not know a lot about momos,” he recalls. Slowly, he moved to his current location near the Jal Vayu Vihar Bus Stop.  Suraj starts preparing for the evening as early as 6 am as he chops everything and makes the sauces.

Once the momos are done, he comes to his spot at Kammanahalli at 5 pm and stays till he sells out, which is at the most by 8.30 pm.

Post that, he shops for the next day and starts the preparation process all over again. One gets steaming and succulent vegetarian (consisting of cabbage, carrot, garlic and onion) and chicken momos here. The momos are made at home by Suraj and brought to the location in a steamer.

They are served hot on the spot by Suraj and his assistants, who wear clean plastic gloves while doing so.

With a plate of eight vegetarian and chicken momos costing Rs 50 and Rs 70 respectively, one can be rest assured that there is no pinch on the pocket.

Though the momos are mildly spiced, spice-lovers need not be disappointed as they come with two homemade spicy and tangy sauces — peanut and garlic chilli.

And customers can’t stop raving about these sauces. Captain Dawson, a regular, says, “I have been eating here for a long time. The best thing about the momos are the sauces. These guys are humble and kind as well.”

Abhishek, a professional from IBM, stops here at times for a quick bite too. “I am a vegetarian and have tried many other momo places. But nothing comes close to this one. The sauce is excellent,” he says. His colleague Karthik agrees. “I am coming here for the first time and it has been a good experience.”

‘Mister Momo Man’ sells on the footpath next to the Jal Vayu Vihar Bus Stop opposite Sena Vihar in Kammanahalli. He is there all days from 5 pm onwards. For details, call 9740404920.
